sorry for links not working: new typepad blog coming on Monday!)
Colorado Springs blogger Non-Prophet’s May 10 story about Ted Haggard’s email to his parishoners (http://nonprophet.typepad.com/nonprophet/2005/05/ted_haggard_don.html) about their behavior during media visits from Barbara Walters and Tom Brokaw made Michael Roberts’ media column in Denver’s Westword (http://westword.com/issues/2005-05-26/news/message.html), which made national media gossip columnist Romonesko’s blog today (http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=45.html).
Interestingly, Colorado Springs Independent Editor Cara DeGette writes about the same subject in her column in today’s issue of the Colorado Springs Independent (not yet posted on the web), but fails to mention Non-Prophet as the source. Strange, given that he’s local and that his story was picked up by the national news media almost immediately after he made the posting.
Comments:
Newsweek is fluff for the most part but this weeks issue (5/27/05) contains an interesting half-hearted apology over its blundering of sources that led to the Quaran in the toilet fiasco. The article talks about how news sources fail to quote sources, misrepresent sources and appropriate sources from other publications.
For those familiar with the Westward and the Indy it is no suprise that the Indy often follows general trends in the Westward to include subject matter and editorial content. There is nothing wrong with emulation but it seems that Kara fucked up on this one.
Does this mean that the Indy is terminally fucked and useless as many on this forum rant about?
No, not really. The Indy, despite its shortcomings, provides the only real reporting in this city. Without the Indy many very important stories would be swept under the carpet and ignored.
My point is that liberal reactionism (synonomys with anger)is unproductive. It’s something that the entire left is guilty of, and it’s one of the reasons we have no real power. 1994 was certainly a bitch and blinded-sided many. It does not excuse constant complaining by the disaffected or those who are just plain grumpy people (re: Kristin’s anti-Indy rant: why didn’t you quit earlier?). Keep it in perspective though.
True, the Indy does not reflect many of the younger voices and is often awkwardly out of touch with the younger crowd (16-33) and cultural scene. Foggies in this town maintain their high status even though their time has passed.
The attention many older established artists that are featured continually in the paper get is really a disservice to younger artists who actually have something interesting to say. Unfortunately, many at the indy would have no idea where to look. Besides, isn’t easier for Hazelnut to get on his knees for the established crowd.
Oops! I digress.
Check out the newsweek issue, even though it’s a flimsy mag, if you’re interested in the subject.
Otherwise, jump of a cliff.
Yehaa!
