This blog is a Horcrux: the first of many Potter-related posts to come. : Newspeakblog.com

Sleeve of Wizard

July 07

The Denver Post ran a Harry Potter cover story today speculating that the boy wizard will be killed in the last book. Said the Post:

There are so many grand literary precedents for Harry Potter to take that last broom ride into the sky, and so many cathartic possibilities for families should he pass on, that it would almost be a shame not to off the wildly popular teenage wizard.

Meh. I can see the possibility and the precedents, but I will still cry my fucking eyes out if it happens. I continue, two years after Half-Blood Prince, to have Dumbledore-death-related night terrors. (Just kidding.) (But no, seriously, I do.)

I’ve been thinking about liveblogging my read of Deathly Hallows, which would look a little bit like this:

12:01 a.m.
Yessss! The book is finally here! I can’t wait! Yesss!

12:38
No way!

1:42
I cannot believe she went there! Yesssss!

2:21
Oh. My. Gawd.

And so on.

Keith Olbermann also wrote a column about a possible ending. There’s no way in hell he’s right, but you can enjoy the column here.

Whore, I think it’s exceedingly adorable that you love Harry Potter so much.

Oh! Roger Federer just beat Rafael Nadal in five sets to become a 5-time Wimbledon champion. He did so in the presence of Bjorn Borg (with gray hair and clad in a suit…surreal!), another 5-time Wimbledon champion. Goosebumps all around!

There is a very good possibility that he IS right, if you ask me. The last horcrux definitely resides within Harry himself (how else to explain his ability to communicate with serpents?). Harry will, no doubt, finally discover this and realize he needs to sacrafice himself in order to save the world for muggles and magicians alike. I think, however, that in our hero’s eleventh hour, Dumbledore the White will come in to save him, saying all that was really needed was his WiLLINGNESS to be sacraficed.

…. and once again, JK Rowling will have created something new out of so many old stories…. (that’s a compliment, mind you)

I think it’s a possibility that Harry will die, but the hokum that Olbermann conjures about Harry giving up his magic is plain ridiculous and, more importantly, has no place in the Rowling canon. And Dumbledore’s dead. He’ll help Harry only through his portrait and the Chocolate Frog cards, but he won’t save him. If anyone does, it’ll be Snape, and Snape will die doing it. But my money’s certainly on Harry’s scar or Harry himself being a Horcrux.

Another interesting point: I think it’s a misconception that Lily Potter died from Avada Kedavra and that Harry survived it. I think it was the Horcrux-making spell that killed her and which rebounded onto Harry and Voldemort, making him into the vapor he became. I also think there was a witness to it and that witness was either A) Wormtail or B) Frank Longbottom. How else would everyone know what had happened?

Regardless of what I think, though, I know Rowling is going to surprise me, and I’m peeing myself a little just thinking about it.

Interesting bit about the scar being a Hrocrux Aaron but my money is on Dumbledore being an unregistered Animagus and taking flight as a Phoenix before his “death” in Half Blood Prince. He will return to aid Harry in the final battle only to die a second and final time in Deathly Hollows. Of course, many other peripheral characters will meet their demise but I agree with the CNN article that says something about the overall theme of pretty much every book has been triumph in the face of evil and adversity. The Harry-Ron-Hermione trifecta will remain intact, but Mad Eye, Neville, and those other guys are toast.

Hell, they win in Return of the Jedi, but even Yoda dies. Fuckin’ Yoda.

No way Dumbledore is an Animagus. Rowling has said that Dumbledore is dead, period. Unless you’re being sarcastic, in which case my quick rejoinder clearly marks me as the biggest nerd in the world. (I am.)

And, to up the nerd ante, remember that Dumbledore’s brother Aberforth is still out there somewhere. We’ll definitely see him in the next book.

    huh?
