So the news from downtown merchants is that, not only is the Bijou bridge slated for an early completion date and is under budget, but the city is also hosting a breakfast for downtowners. I wouldn’t hold your breath just yet, but our municipal gubmint is apparently committing to a campaign to hype downtown shops, restaurants, housing and downtown as a destination.

Two major questions: First, why didn’t they do this a year ago; and second, how widespread is the campaign going to be? I can’t imagine the city shelling out for TV commercials or cock-punching other city locales by bringing bus-stop ads to the boondocks. Anybody heard anything about this?

Don’t get me wrong.  I am as happy as anyone to see Larry Craig unveiled as the hypocrite jerk that he is.  I’ll be thrilled to see him lose his place in Congress.  I only wish he’d been voted out of office for his twisted ideology.  Or been hit by a bus.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that a lone punk cop, sitting in a bathroom stall, can take down Larry Craig?  Or any man?  No witnesses.  No evidence.  Just some gay-hating cop sitting in a stall watching him tap his feet and peer through a crack in the door.  Such horrors!  The officer’s dead-on description of cruising behavior seems to be evidence of Craig’s guilt.  Am I alone in thinking that it smacks of police training?  And since when has a subtle sexual overture, if that is in fact what Larry Craig made, been a crime?  If you listen to the interrogation, Craig says that the cop made an overture to him as well, which the officer now denies.  So it is a case of he said/he said.  Since when has the burden of proof not been on the shoulders of the accuser?  No proof, no case.

If Larry Craig stuck his penis under the divider, that would be considered indecent exposure.  If he pinned the officer against the wall and groped him, that would be assault.  What exactly was his crime?  Our glee that it was a bigoted ass like Craig who was caught in this sting allows us to ignore the amazing erosion of civil liberties at the hands of the state underlying the case.  Who cares about the rights of bathroom-lurking gays?  They aren’t us.  We’re still safe.

If I were you men, I would start to go to the bathroom in pairs like we women have always done.  We do it for social reasons.  You should do it to protect yourself from your, uh, protectors.

Every Friday at mid-day until mid-afternoon the CC kids who grow veggies on the Venetucci farm as some kind of edumacational project sell their nummies right outside of Worner center on the corner of Cache and Cascade. I bought some green beans and tomatoes last week and was right pleased. Check it out.

To the Editor:

This is in response to Mr. Routon’s scathing column on Dr. Michael
DeMarsche in the August 16, 2007 issue.  Aside from sounding like a

jilted lover when talking about De Marsche’s imminent departure, Mr.
Routon also seems to have no confidence in the city of Colorado Springs
to be self-sufficient.  We should be grateful for the new ideas
DeMarsche introduced to this sleepy community - Chihuly, John Waters,

and Thomas Hoving, among others - plus a set of exemplary artistic
standards.  We should also thank him for doubling the presence of the
Fine Arts Center, giving us a second gallery downtown to show the work
of Colorado artists, and accompanying it with a delicious, innovative

restaurant. Finally, instead of whining that he has gone on to another
interesting project, we should congratulate him on tripling the Fine
Arts Center membership and finding over $28 million in this community
and creating a world-class museum for all citizens to enjoy. He has also
put into place a plan for the future and hired an excellent staff to
carry it out. The hard work is done; the man on the white horse has
moved on. Now it is our job as citizens of this beautiful city to insure
that De Marsche’s legacy, however short his tenure, is continued with

the same enthusiasm, dedication and flair that he put into it.  We do
not have time to form any "scars", much less heal them.  We have a new
museum to celebrate and a truly visionary Fine Arts Center board of
trustees to support, and they are not going anywhere.

Sincerely,

Eve Tilley
President, Pikes Peak Arts Council

I’ve heard and read lots of things, but here’s the full plan as sent to me from the Downtown Partnership about the Cimmarron Bridge closure, like it or lump it:

-Cimarron Bridge will close to traffic in mid-October, after the Bijou Bridge has re-opened. The Bijou Bridge is scheduled to re-open the first week of October 2007.

-Colorado Avenue, which has also been impacted by COSMIX, should be reopened to normal four-lane traffic patterns by mid-November 2007. It is currently open to three lanes of traffic, one westbound and two eastbound.

-Staff plans to have the contractor begin work on the new Cimarron Bridge no later than October 15.

-The contractor will be required to complete the south half of Cimarron Street Bridge first so that a partial opening can occur by Spring 2008.

-The partial opening will include four lanes, two in each direction, with no weight restrictions.

-The four-lane partial opening will be achieved by delaying sidewalk and bike lane installation until the second half of the bridge is completed (early Fall 2008).

-A detailed construction schedule will be available after the construction contract has been awarded.

-The totally completed Cimarron Bridge (Fall 2008) will have six lanes for vehicle traffic, plus bike lanes and sidewalks.

-The total project budget is $8.5M.

-Approximately $2M has been spent so far on design, demolition of the south half of the bridge, utility relocations, and other pre-construction activities.

-Closing the bridge completely for reconstruction is expected to result in both decreased construction time and cost savings.

-Several bridge contractors have submitted proposals. City staff plans to select a contractor through a best value process by September 12 and will then conduct negotiations to finalize the cost and schedule.

-Best value selection considers factors such as qualifications, experience with railroads, personnel, and availability, in addition to the proposed cost and schedule.

-Though safety was the primary consideration in deciding to close Cimarron, City staff also surveyed local businesses and found that 74% of the 100 businesses surveyed supported the recommendation.

-An extensive signage plan will be developed to assist impacted businesses throughout construction.

And for those following The Steel City’s efforts to not drown in CSprings’ poo water, here’s coverage of the Pueblo DA getting his weenie judicially slapped, while the Sierra Club is being allowed to sue our little britches off.

You did a really good job with the local hip-hop story in today’s Indy! A great counterbalance to the police department’s fairly racist response to recent events. It’s a well-reported and balanced, if not necessarily skeptical, look the very real subtext of violence that’s part of the local hip-hop culture. Also much more comprehensive than the Gazette’s shallow coverage of the matter a couple Sundays ago.

Sorry this has to be a back-handed compliment, but it seems like you’re best suited to reporting these kinds of longer stories. Why not suggest to your boss that Matthew Schniper, who has much longer and deeper ties to the community, be named Arts & Entertainment Editor while you handle more stories like today’s and focus on writing? I can’t imagine they’re paying you enough to bear the title and responsibilities anyway. (Maybe you should also suggest to your superiors that they join you at the Labor Unity Picnic at Turkey Creek Recreation Area at Ft. Carson that’s advertised in the centerfold!)

Sincerely,

Noel Black
