Court Bitch-Slaps Rev. Phelps
A jury on Wednesday ordered an anti-gay Kansas church to pay $2.9 million in compensatory damages to relatives of a U.S. Marine after church members cheered his death at his funeral.
The jury in federal court determined that the Westboro Baptist Church based in Topeka, and three of its principals, had invaded the privacy of the dead man’s family and inflicted emotional distress when they protested at his funeral last year.
The soldier’s death was God’s punishment on America for tolerating homosexuality, the church’s members said.
Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder died in combat in Iraq in March 2006.
Snyder’s father testified that his son was not gay, but the church targeted the military as a symbol of America’s tolerance of gays.
The Westboro Church was sued by the father, Albert Snyder of York, Pennsylvania. The case was the first civil suit against the church, which has demonstrated at some 300 military funerals in the past two years.
The church, which is unaffiliated to any major denomination, is headed by Rev. Fred Phelps, who has been waging a one-man war against homosexuality for years. Most members of the church belong to his extended family.
Intent: Free Publicity
Perceived Message: You need to cough up 2.9mil
(sorry if I offended anyone with the term “bitch-slap”)

An audiotape just surfaced of mullet and leather chaps aficionado Dog the Bounty Hunter on the phone with his son, hurling racial slurs about his son’s girlfriend, who is black. My first thought was, Dog the Bounty Hunter has a son? Really? I then wondered if Bobby Brown Bail Bonds will start to retreat from the ads they’ve been running in bathrooms citywide, which proudly state “As Seen on Dog the Bounty Hunter!” From what I know, the agency has also been investigating murder cold-cases, which is great, but my guess is that they probably want to avoid an image as crazy racists.
Listen to Dog’s tirade here.
Update: A&E has now suspended production of the show and Dog has reached out to the de facto arbiter of any celebrity racism allegations, Rev. Al Sharpton.

I came across this while flipping through House Beautiful magazine at the vet’s. Apparently it’s part of an ad campaign the Kiowa Kartel is launching. They’ll be running ads in Parenting, Highlights, Martha Stewart Living, Modern Bride and the Colorado Springs Independent.
(Okay, that’s the last in-joke for today. Have a happy and safe Halloween.)

I found this online accompanied by the following text:
The Bijou Gang is formed mostly of Newspeak employees and The O’Reily Factor subscribers. Trying to keep their “street cred” is HUGE for them. The Bijou gang formed in an effort to supress what Newspeak is really about…
Ha-ha. Good one.
In totally unrelated news, I heard today that Hollywood megastar Ben Affleck is moving to Colorado Springs! Apparently there’s a neighborhood here that appeals to the star of such films as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Gigli and Daredevil. Welcome to town, Affleck! I know you’ll fit right in! Here’s some pictures of the hunky actor, who is, it must be stressed, NOT a ginormous douchebag:

Good news in Colorado! Governor Ritter became the 13th governor in the nation to reject federal funding for abstinence only education through Title V programs.
Research has shown abstinence only programs are ineffective in preventing unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Earlier this year, Governor Ritter signed HB 1292 which grants access to comprehensive, medically accurate and age appropriate sexuality education for Colorado’s teens.
Be sure to ask around in your community and see what kind of sexuality education the young people at your local schools are getting!
