Wow! What a terrible idea! : Newspeakblog.com

Regarding the above and this story in yesterday’s ‘Zette:

Fuck you. Seriously.

While there are worse ideas than the Day of Truth, which purports to counter today’s Day of Silence with an “honest conversation about homosexuality,” they number pretty much in the single digits.* And you know what’s hilarious? Here’s the message students are encourage to print onto T-shirts or cards to hand out (emphasis added):

I’m speaking the Truth to break the silence.
True tolerance means that people with differing — even opposing — viewpoints can freely exchange ideas and respectfully listen to each other.
It’s time for an honest conversation about homosexuality.
There’s freedom to change if you want to.
Let’s talk.

So, let’s break this down. Fundotards get upset that the LGBT community creates a day to bring attention to violence against LGBT kids in schools. This year’s Day “is held in memory of Lawrence King, a California 8th-grader who was shot and killed Feb. 12 by a classmate because of his sexual orientation and gender expression.” Fundies look at that and don’t say, “Golly, how sad that such intolerant behavior exists,” but rather, “That’s promoting a homosexshul agenda!”

So the fundies then send their kids to public schools the Monday following Day of Silence with T-shirts and placards devoted to curing gays. “Let’s talk,” indeed. Let’s talk about how curing gays totally works—until it, you know, doesn’t.

The ‘Zette says that 7000 local kids participated in the Day of Truth last year. Ack. My favorite part of this is, again, the whining and oh-dear-me gasp of discrimination against the poor fundies, who appropriate civil-rights rhetoric and claim, semi-truthfully, “But our beliefs aren’t being respected in public schools!” Well, good.

Maybe you folks should move away..

*Worse ideas: #1, #2, #3, #4.

“What we’re concerned about is that events like these actually end up promoting homosexuality in public schools, and that actually creates a hostile climate for students of faith,” said Candi Cushman, an education analyst for Focus on the Family.

    “Promoting homosexuality”?!? That’s like this:

“Hey, there kids! Ever thought about being a homosexual? No? Oh, I see a few of you out there nodding your heads. Well, for all you hetero kids out there, let me tell you all about it! And for listening to my sales pitch, you’ll get a chance to win a free iPod, whether you decide to join the gay team or not!”

Somehow, I don’t think “promoting homosexuality” is the goal of Day of Silence.

We should totally get some people together and start pitching homosexuality just like that. With little fake “gay patches” and “gay gum” and the like. It’d be an interesting way to waste a day.

“Participants believe people who want to can change their sexual orientation.”

I believe people who want to can change their religion. (But I’m NOT going to print up little cards that say that and hand them out, DUH!)

But really, I believe perhaps we should start feeding the Xians to the lions again, so they will have something to REALLY feel persecuted about.

    Ugh.

I know full well that in this forum, I’m preaching to the choir and all, but I just have to vent y’all. Reading the “information” on their site is a sick fetish in itself. These people jerk themselves off constantly with unscientific, repetitive bullshit. I’m with suesun - feed ‘em to the lions. It’s so ridiculous. Thanks for making sure we never progress socially or intellectually, you flat-earth believing, snake-handling freaks!! Jesus H. Christ on a Triscuit. Ugh!

I sure hope Heidi Montag comes and sets you guys straight on this,(no pun intended) and learns y’all up on the ethical superiority of hetero-buttsex.

having come up in a fundie Christian church, half of what they tell the kids is that everyone is out to get Christians, that we have to hold tight in our faith, that the lions are still waiting outside that door. one time, a girl came to youth group that questioned our beliefs, and the youth pastors said (after she left of course, cowards) that we had just witnessed Satan coming in an trying to shake our faith. Can you say psycho??? Not that far from David Koresh mentality, eh?
All the schools they mentioned are probably 90% white Christian schools, so they are in essence preaching to their own choir. Pity the 10% who don’t go along with it. Makes me want to move my kids out of this town so they don’t have to go to these bullshit public schools that allow this shit.
These fundie Christian kids are brainwashed and hold tight to their beliefs because the adults build up the fear of ‘persecution’ by the secular world on a daily basis.

You know… I think many people would rather watch BloodRayne than participate in Day of Truth.

And tied with #1 should be the equally disgusting Bacon Flavored Mints.
