Jihad Against Marriage

August 08

The Gazette printed an AP story discussing how Hallmark, that monolith of good cheer and gooey tidings, will be rolling out cards for gay marriage. Sez the piece:

Hallmark started offering “coming out” cards last year, and the four designs of same-sex marriage cards are being gradually released this summer and will be widely available by next year. No sales figures were available yet.

“When I have shopped for situations like babies or weddings for gay friends I have good luck in quirky stores,” said Kathryn Hamm, president of the Web site gayweddings.com.

“But if you are just in a generic store … the bride and groom symbol or words are in most cards,” she said. “It becomes difficult to find some that are neutral but have some style.”

To me, it’s heartwarming that gay couples are now afforded the same level of impersonal, off-the-shelf sentiments available to heterosexual couples, depressive rodents, Hanna Barbera fans and the hot-flash demographic. Of course, ‘Zette commenters will not take this sitting down. An outrage! (As one of them wisely points out, a Focus call for boycott of Hallmark can’t be far behind.)

But to you, Newspeak readers, I give this warm n’ fuzzy:

That’s what happens when you Google “worst e-card ever,” by the way.
