December 08

I just spent a good while looking at the Gazette’s photographer picks from 2008 here. There are some mighty fine photographers on staff!

Mark Reis has some truly stunning shots from the 2008 Olympics, including this:

Bryan Oller has some great shots of the DNC and protests, including this one:

Check ‘em out here.

Kudos to the ‘Zette for hiring and retaining such talented photographers!

What better way to kick 2008 to the curb than with a dose of mall-liciousness? Enter Mall of America Blog. Now, I grew up in suburban Minnesota, so the 1992 opening of the Mall was pretty much the most exciting thing anyone could possibly imagine. Camp Snoopy! Four Bath and Body Works! Legoland! A food court stall called Minnesota Picnic, where you could get cheese curds and walleye on a stick! Rainforest Café! Yessss!

Then, five years later, I started working at the Mall, as a bow-tie-clad waiter at Johnny Rockets. This meant that I had the privilege of parking a million miles a way and selling $9 cheeseburgers to tourists from Georgia who would fly in specifically to shop at the Mall—and then would bitch about the cost of everything. Johnny Rockets was (is?) located directly overlooking Camp Snoopy, which had a roving marching band whom I’d get to hear every 20 minutes while scraping up 50-cent tips. This was not a dream job, but it did allow me access to the after-hours mall, a huge, silent and creepy place.

Anyway, do check out that blog, which carries such gem observations as:

I wonder how many takes were required for this woman to achieve just the right balance of phony surprise, bewilderment, awe, delight, and fright at the sight of seeing a shark at Underwater Adventures.

(Thanks to Rhys for the heads up!)

Just got word that Not My Tribe is hosting a “Justice for Palestine” protest today at 4:30 at Acacia Park to get the word out to stop the Israeli bombing of Palestine. Those so inclined, please join in.

But maybe you’ll listen now that it caused a semi rollover on the interstate. The ‘Zette just reported:

Northbound Interstate 25 has been closed at Nevada Avenue following a semi-truck rollover accident.

The truck was the only vehicle involved in the accident, which appears to have been caused by high winds, police said.

The Colorado Springs police and fire departments have reported to the scene of the accident, and are working to clear the left lane. The on-ramp at Nevada has been closed as well, with traffic diverted to Commerce Center Drive.

Weather.com is reporting gusts up to 60 mph right now. And yeah, sure, wind might be Colorado’s blue chip for the new green economy and stuff, but it is pissing me off. Wind will stop at nothing in order to see you and your family destroyed.

I had “Stack” and “Coccyx,” but I couldn’t have guessed that Bristol Palin would name her baby Tripp. Those wacky Alaskans!

The good thing is, the baby comes pre-rehab-funded, what with the bounty tabloids are offering for pictures of the tot.

This is from Wired’s Top 10 Incredible Animal Videos, and I have absolutely no clue what is going on. Is this a Japanese game show for owls? Why is the Empire March playing? Why are those people watching? Today is my day to simply be confused.

(Perplexing or not, do check out the rest of Wired’s list, which has Skidboot the Amazing Dog plus a cowboy who waxes poetic about shoeing horses.)

Okay, I can’t resist posting this one too.

So what does it mean when I, bopping merrily through a downtown alley, come across what appears to be two spent .22 shells alongside one other unspent shell? Does it mean that we are finally so urban and streets that casual gunfire peppers our avenues? Or that I should be frightened that so many PTSD-plagued veterans carry guns? Good times.

According to the New York Times an LA judge has ruled that Fox Network owns the rights to Watchmen which was filmed by Warner Brothers…The fate of the Watchmen is now in jeopardy.

Fox acquired rights to the “Watchmen” graphic novel in the late 1980s for the producer Lawrence Gordon, but eventually dropped its own plan to make a movie from its story, about the underside of life for superbeings.

Mr. Gordon later pursued the project with Universal Pictures, and then with Paramount Pictures, before shooting it with Warner and Legendary under an arrangement that allows Paramount to distribute the film abroad.

Yay! Impending war between India and Pakistan:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan has started to redeploy thousands of troops to the Indian border from the tribal areas near Afghanistan, intelligence officials said Friday, raising tensions in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks.

The move was expected to frustrate the United States, which has been pushing Pakistan to step up its fight against al-Qaida and Taliban militants near the Afghan border.

India has blamed Pakistani-based militants for last month’s siege on its financial capital, which killed 164 people and has provoked an increasingly bitter war of words between nuclear-armed neighbors that have fought three wars in 60 years.

The troops headed to the Indian border were being diverted away from tribal areas near Afghanistan, the two officials said. They said elements of the army’s 14th Infantry Division were being redeployed to the towns of Kasur and Sialkot, close to the Indian border.

The military began the troop movement Thursday and plans to shift a total of 20,000 soldiers, they said without providing a timeframe.

W might get to invade Pakistan yet.
