March 09

This just in—two local arts publications shutting down.

Springs Magazine ceases publication after 27 years of serving arts community.

Colorado Springs-Sunrise Publishing, Inc., publishers of the Springs Magazine and Bon Vivant announced today that both magazines ceased publication effective March 31, 2009.

According to publisher Michael Gardner, “It was a wrenching decision. In our 27 years of publication we’ve been through a number of lo cal and national downturns but this most recent recession has been different in many ways. As much as associate publisher Sharon Friedman and I wanted to continue serving the region’s arts community the economics of doing so just weren’t there.”

“I know there are other venues for our advertising customers but I still feel bad about not being there for them,” said Friedman, who is also Director of Advertising. “I’ve worked with many of our clients so long that they are like family and I’m going to miss them terribly. I feel so grateful and honored to have been able to have served them for so long.”

Springs Magazine was the region’s oldest and largest monthly magazine devoted to championing the arts. It would have been 28 years old this May. Bon Vivant, its sister publication, was a high-end four-color slick stock direct mailed publication also focused on local art and artists.

“I know everyone is saying print journalism is an artifact of another century, that the Internet is the future. We considered transitioning to an online platform, like many papers are doing, but frankly there are still too few successful models. The Internet may be publishing’s future but it’s not here yet,” said Gardner.

“It’s been an incredible ride,” said Gardner. “I’m very proud of the stories we’ve done along the way, the message we’ve helped to deliver, that the arts are a vital foundation for a successful community.”

“It’s hard to imagine doing anything else,” said Friedman, a sentiment echoed by Gardner. “I believe we still have ink running in our veins. Even though we won’t be publishing news about the arts we still plan to actively support those who are making it,” said Gardner.

HARD NEWS STORY - Business and Economy, and Science

SAVING MONEY ON YOUR MONTHLY WATER BILL

(To Spend on Movie Tickets, Dinner, Shopping, etc)

SAVING WATER AT THE SAME TIME

(So There Would Be Lakes to Swim At Every Summer)

AND GETTING SOME ALONE TIME

CAN YOU COUPLES DO ALL THAT?

HOW CAN YOU COUPLES SAVE WATER, MONEY AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

The economy is weak right now, and there is no money for you couples to go out on dates. The cost of your monthly water bill is at an all time high at this moment. After this bill has been paid, there is no money for you to take your date to a movie or out to dinner.

Drought seasons are no laughing matter either. With all the water wasted, water resources are tapped, and Prospect Lake has been drained and then refilled. Not much good news for you who love to swim and Jet Ski, now is there?

And with busy schedules, obligations and other holdbacks, there is never enough time for you lovebirds to spend time with each other. That may lead to breakups and divorce. Bad, Bad News!!!

So here’s a solution for you boyfriend/girlfriend couple living together, or if you are a married couple. For money to spend on dates, for water to swim in every summer and to stop the splitting-up from happening – shower together.

THE ADVANTAGES:

One advantage is saving a lot of dough. The monthly water bill is $15/month if you take separate showers, but if you minus the $7.50 for showering together, you would have an extra $7.50 in your wallet. Something extra for you is $7.50/2 = $3.75 every month on your water bill. So the $15 (average water bill) – $3.75 (after paying your half of $7.50 on your water bill) = $11.25 you would have more of.

Another advantage is the gallons of water you saved. 2.5 gallons of water per minute, times 10 minutes if you are showering together, you saved 25 gallons. No gallons of water would be taken out of Prospect Lake.

Third advantage is spending some time with each other. Your schedule is so busy; you never have any time for sex and romping.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF TAKING SHOWERS SEPARATELY:

ProgressiveU website reports, “If you take a 10 minute shower normally, and the 2nd person takes a 10 minute shower normally, the two of you would be spending 20 minutes in the shower, twice the amount of water.”[1] TreeHugger website adds that [the average person]…use an average of 2.5 gallons of fresh water for every minute they shower. [2] Suppose you have calculated this. We all know that 10 minutes (for a man), plus another 10 minutes (for a woman), equals 20 minutes. Now, multiply 20 minutes by 2.5 gallons of water per minute. You would have wasted 50 gallons a day; enough to drain the water out of lakes, so there would not be a place to fish or swim every summer.

Worse is that…if you take a 10 minute shower, you spend about 25 cents a day. [3] 10 minutes (man), plus 10 minutes (woman), equals 20 minutes a day. 20 minutes would be 50 cents a day. 50 cents X 30 days in a month = $15 you would pay in a water bill for that month. Not good news for going out to eat or seeing a movie, now is there?

What about your busy schedule? You get so caught up in work, school, children and other obligations; yet there is never any alone time for the both of you.

ACTION STEPS TO TAKE:

Both of you should spend, as ProgressiveU says, “…12 or 13 minutes in the shower, therefore saving time and water.” [4] As far as the 25 cents a day is concerned – 25 cents a day, times 30 days in a month, equals $7.50 for that month.

Suppose the water bill was that $7.50: divide the water bill by two first; your lady gives her half of $3.75, and you have the other $3.75; your get the money order for that water bill, and take it down to the Colorado Spring Utilities office.

TO MAKE THE MOST OF A RECESSION PERIOD AND TOUGH ECOMONIC TIMES

A HARD NEWS STORY - BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

We all want to experience some fun stuff for ourselves: going to a Broncos game live at Invesco Field at Mile High, go to a strip club, mall crawling, buy goodies on EBay, and lots more. However negative shit can interfere with a good time. For the stores we go to, we don’t have any money to help support its economy. We get money from going to work, but recession keeps us from paying rent and bills, and having money left over for fun. Economic downfall and recession period keeps us from enjoying life to the fullest. What is even worse is the high price in apartment rent: the tenant is the one paying full price for monthly rent, and no money is left over afterwards for that tenant to have fun.

However, there is a solution to the problem, and that is sharing an apartment. It makes the most of a recession period, and there is money left over to spend at fun places, which then helps with economic recovery. Those statistics need to increase, so businesses and jobs and thrive more than ever. The instructions are easy to follow when applying for an apartment and paying rent.

MAKING THE MOST OF A RECESSION PERIOD

In a nasty-ass recession we are in, when tenants pay their share of the rent, it saves them money; how is that making the most of a recession?

Jennifer Dorsey is the apartment manager, and Shakeema Mike is the assistant manager, at the Arbor Pointe Apartments in South Colorado Springs. Shakeema responds, “when you split the amount of rent by number of people, you included, there would be more money put aside for fun.”[1]

“Money is saved when splitting the rent rather than being the one paying full price for rent,” Dorsey adds, “however, you have to find someone who will pull their weight around.” [2] In other words, find someone who will pay his or her share of the rent, help out with the cleaning of the apartment, and just be a team player in the process.

AFTER RENT IS PAID, MORE MONEY FOR YOU TO HAVE FUN

When they have saved money on rent, there would be money left over to spend at bars, shopping malls, buy Broncos memorabilia, and other cool pastimes – and that would be good for the economy that is facing harsh times. What is Dorsey’s response to how to fight a harsh economic crisis?

“Every individual has different monetary needs and wants,” Dorsey adds, “it also depends on the apartment and how many people occupy it.” [3] “An example would be: in a one bedroom apartment, 2 to 3 people occupy it; in a two bedroom, 4 to 5 people live in it.

Nonetheless, as Dorsey replies, “it helps people save money on living expenses, so people can have money left over to enjoy the fun stuff in life.” [4]

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

At the Arbor Pointe, there is one group of people sharing a two-bedroom apartment, and each roommate pays their share of the rent. How come other people – in other unit in the same or different apartment complexes – are not saving money by sharing a place? There is a very few people who are sharing an apartment, and roomies paying their share of the rent. Why that statistic?

“People do not want to compromise, and would rather have it their way,” Dorsey adds, “if you want to watch television, and your roommate wants to study, there would be conflicts of interests.” [5] So as Dorsey suggests, find someone who is compatible, and who is a team player.

HOW SAVING MONEY ON RENT WORKS

Look at how many bedrooms needed, figure out how much rent is at an apartment complex, divide that by the amount of people (you included), and that is how much each of you will pay each month.

Example would be for a one-bedroom at Arbor Pointe Apartments – the cost of rent for a one-bedroom apartment is 395; you and your girlfriend occupy that apartment, so you divide the rent by two; your half would be $197.50, and she pays her half of $197.50.

Dorsey suggest that payment arrangement, “your roommate or two gives you – the original tenant – their share of the rent, you then only purchase one money order, and you give the money order to me.” [6] Before they can share an apartment with you, Dorsey also suggests, “when applying for apartment, there are separate applications for an apartment unit, but we write down add a roommate to separate applications.” [7]

Here’s the difference between France and the U.S.

Workers in France take their boss hostage.

Workers in the United States send threatening e-mails laced with profanities.

Also, we have our own little scandal brewing here in COS with the USOC deal starting to look as turbulent and unpredictable as the storm that’s supposed to be headed our way! Click here to read John Hazlehurst’s piece on LandCo and the deal that nobody understood.

THIS JUST IN–the DA is investigating Ray Marshall and LandCo.

If you’re young and unemployed, it’s probably occurred to you the possibility of enlisting in the armed forces.  With the decreasingly likelihood of hazardous deployment, the competitive pay and free room and board compare favorably to the alternatives (endless days of turning in destined-for-rejection applications at Taco Bell).

You might be glad to know then that the KISS Army is still active and recruiting.

The newest Taibbi tell-all about the bailout debacle is a long article, but man, is it worth it. I just love his writing. Brutally unapologetic. Check it, the second paragraph offers tidbits like this:

“In the final three months of last year, [AIG] lost more than $27 million every hour. That’s $465,000 a minute, a yearly income for a median American household every six seconds, roughly $7,750 a second. And all this happened at the end of eight straight years that America devoted to frantically chasing the shadow of a terrorist threat to no avail, eight years spent stopping every citizen at every airport to search every purse, bag, crotch and briefcase for juice boxes and explosive tubes of toothpaste.”

And it just gets better and better:

“The reality is that the worldwide economic meltdown and the bailout that followed were together a kind of revolution, a coup d’état. They cemented and formalized a political trend that has been snowballing for decades: the gradual takeover of the government by a small class of connected insiders, who used money to control elections, buy influence and systematically weaken financial regulations.”

You know what? That’s teaser enough for you. Go read the whole thing. Be delighted in the language Taibbi uses and be horrified at the content of the story he weaves.

I’m doing my own market research study. It pertains to how many people love sex, violence and rock-n-roll; the reporting of hard news (education/legal and law/science/business and economy); and how their interests can help me better my skills as a hard news reporter.

http://www.packofseven.tv/tvnt/showthread.php?t=5266

TVNEWSTALK.NET - it is a blog about television news: from tv personalities local and network, to news production (news themes, news opens), and everything in between.

On that blog, I’ve done my own research study:

  • 88% of participants love sex, violence and rock and roll
  • They have read the article I posted on Newspeakblog.com - recycling to help the economy and fight global warming (saving beaches and ensuring ski season closing on-schedule). http://www.newspeakblog.com/2008/12/…l-gores-fight/
  • Amazing comments were brewing.

Answer this first question: how many of you love sex, violence and rock-n-roll?

Answer this second question: Besides sex (porn and music videos), violence (WWE and cage fighting) and rock-n-roll (Metallica and monster trucks); what are your other interests?

Then read that Hard News Story I posted - http://www.newspeakblog.com/2008/12/…l-gores-fight/ - about Recycling (science/business and economy) being the real stimulus package and protect the beaches from tsunamis due to global warming.

Answer this last question: how does this hard news story pertain to your interests and pastimes?

Sylvia Plath’s son, Nicholas Hughes died on “March 16 by his own hand.” It was 40 years to the day since Ted Hughes’ (his father) lover Assia Wevill killed herself in a copycat suicide of the one committed by Plath.
