I have seen no mention of this in the news, probably because it’s buried in the ham-demic hysteria, (SWINE FLU! SWINE FLU!), but
Due to insufficient revenue to maintain current service levels, DASH (Route 55 - Downtown Area Shuttle) service will be discontinued effective this Friday, May 1st
My source at Mountain Metro Transit says ridership was up 140% from last year. The FREX parking lot on S. Nevada has been full most days. Working downtown, I ride the shuttle 2-3 times a week. It has had a reputation at being the Bum Bus (remember Noel’s excellent story in the Homelessness issue?), but in the past two years it’s become a great tool for commuters and has helped to bridge the gap between the developing South Downtown and North Downtown.
This was a purely budgetary decision. Metro Transit is also being forced to shorten or slash many other routes, despite increased ridership. Meanwhile, we’re in the midst of a paradigm shift–people want public transportation. Despite the existence of a really fantastic 20-year strategic plan, if budget cuts continue at the current rate, we may be without a bus system in two to three years. Can a metropolitan area of a half a million people survive without public transportation? The ramifications are frightening.

The image below, created with Bracketology, sums it all up. I wish I could take the credit, but I have to tip the hat to good old Anonymous. Hee. Hee. Hee.

From the oh-so-hilarious “Amen, Brother” by Paul Rudnick in this week’s New Yorker:
I, too, have struggled with my sexuality and have come out the other side, into the good green pastures of Christian family life.As a teen-ager, I found that I was attracted both to serving Our Lord and to Jimmy Wiggins, the assistant coach of my high-school soccer team. I was in torment, and I would pray for hours on end, asking God why He would command me to love Him so deeply and at the same time just go and create Jimmy’s snug little soccer shorts.

Dog the Bounty Hunter nearly bit it in Colorado Springs yesterday. I found this at The Superficial, of all places:
According to police in Colorado Springs, Colo., Chapman and bail bondsman Bobby Brown were attempting to bring in a man named Hoang Nguyen when he allegedly fired at least one shot at Chapman and Brown with a handgun before fleeing on a motorcycle. Chapman and Brown were armed with paintball guns and returned fire. Hoang was later arrested without incident by Chapman early this morning.
Oh, man. Not even awesome mullets and feathers in your hair will protect you from the 719, Dog.

It’s the 10th anniversary of Columbine, and I’ll weigh in only with this Onion article. A snippet:
“We have begun the long road to healing,” said varsity-football starting halfback Jason LeClaire, 18, a popular senior who on Aug. 16 returned to the school for the first time since the shooting. “We’re bouncing back, more committed than ever to ostracizing those who are different.”
Added LeClaire’s girlfriend, cheerleader Kellie Nelson: “A school where the jocks cannot freely exclude math geeks, drama fags, goths and other inferiors without fearing for their lives is not the kind of school I want to go to.”

Nobody seems to be paying attention to this story.
1,500 farmers in India, driven to desperation by lack of water and debt, committed mass suicide.
I don’t know what to say.

Please, please do it. It would cut our nation’s per-capita TruckNutz numbers by two-thirds.
