Gallery of Contemporary Vandalism, Hi, I'm a Moron!

April 09

So I’m wandering around downtwon today and what do I see but dozens, maybe hundreds of stencilled little red signs all over the sidewalk. “Love Heals” they say, and so I say, “what a nice sentiment.”

But, like everything else in this world, it’s TRADEMARKED.

Forgive my naiveté, but is this a Christian Scientist guerilla marketing campaign or just some kindhearted optimists? Help!

The site is run by Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers, so it is a viral marketing thing, but I don’t really see the angle.

In viral marketing, it’s essential that people ultimately connect your brand to the viral marketing campaign.

In no way do I leave that site feeling like I have a better understanding of RMCC - I feel like I’ve just been put through a branding process for Love itself. Maybe they have a followthrough in mass media that will hit in a few days that will make this all make more sense, but it seems like they’re really dropping the ball by not putting the RMCC logo on the site in a visible way, or explaining WTF this is all about.

I’d say they’ve missed the boat on this one. Too bad, it looks like they put a lot of resources toward this. Looking at how they’ve used sidewalk art, my guess would be that they’re with Vladimir Jones, who handled the St. Francis full services hospital campaign and used a similar tactic.

I couldn’t even find how this was connected to RMCC AT ALL! It was completely annoying.
